Program Requirements

A major in Interdisciplinary Studies consists of a 48-credit hour personalized plan of study including a 6 credit-hour core consisting of IDS 101 and IDS 499. Each student’s plan of study must include at least 27 hours at the 300-level or higher. The BA in Interdisciplinary Studies requires that 24 hours in the major come from the College of Liberal Arts.

  • All Interdisciplinary Studies students are required to complete a 6-credit hour core:
  • 42 credit hour plan of study approved by Interdisciplinary Studies Program
    • Students have two options for constructing this plan of study (see options)
    • 27 hours must be at the 300-level or higher

Option A: Construct a 42-credit hour plan of study around a unifying theme or problem consisting of at least 2 disciplines with no more than 21 credit hours in the same discipline. At least 24 credit hours must come from within the College of Liberal Arts.

Option B: Construct a 42-credit hour plan of study around a unifying theme or problem consisting of 2 minors and complementary courses appropriate to the theme. One of the minors and the complementary courses must come from the College of Liberal Arts. At least 12 hours in each minor must be at the 300-level or higher.

The plan of study will be completed and approved during the student’s enrollment in IDS 101 – Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies.

Students must achieve a grade of C or better in each class that counts towards the major


Admissions

Students interested in the Interdisciplinary Studies major must first meet with the program’s director, Dr. Andrew Pfrenger, for an initial consultation. Start that process by filling out the simple Interdisciplinary Studies Interest form and then schedule an initial advising appointment.

If you feel that Interdisciplinary Studies is a good fit for you, complete the Changing My Major form and submit it to the College of Liberal Arts.
