Students, teachers, staff, and alumni were honored

Students, teachers, staff, and alumni were honored by the College of Liberal Arts at the inaugural College of Liberal Arts Annual Awards Ceremony.
“The College of Liberal Arts Awards Ceremony celebrates some of the outstanding individuals who make our university a special place,” says Lee M. Cohen, dean of liberal arts. “This has been a vision of mine for some time, recognizing recipients of the College level teaching and research awards for faculty, newly created staff awards, student Ventress Scholars and the first College of Liberal Arts James Meredith Changemaker Award, and notable alumni awards. It is an occasion for members of the College community with family and friends of award winners to join and salute these remarkable accomplishments.”
At the ceremony, Cohen noted, “Today we honor some of the best the College has to offer. The College of Liberal Arts is a thriving group of faculty, staff, students, and alumni who play a pivotal role in advancing the University of Mississippi on its path of excellence. Today marks the first time we have come together across all areas in the College to recognize some of their accomplishments. I am grateful for the opportunity.”

Madeleine Dotson, a triple major in Arabic, econom

Madeleine Dotson, a triple major in Arabic, economics and political science, is congratulated by University of Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boyce for becoming the institution’s 18th Truman Scholar, and the 16th Truman Scholar in the College of Liberal Arts.

The Truman Foundation, the nation’s official living memorial to the 33rd U.S. president, awards merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service.

“We are incredibly proud of Madeleine,” Boyce said. “Everything that she has accomplished during her time at the university has landed her in an elite group of exceptionally talented students. She embodies the type of academic and service leader that we celebrate at Ole Miss.”

Now that Dotson has been named a Truman Scholar, she will convene with fellow winners at the 2023 Truman Leadership Week. Then, she will start taking steps to achieve her dream of completing a master’s degree in ecological economics followed by a doctorate in economics.

“I’m excited for leadership week and just to see what’s out there,” she said. “I need to start taking graduate school options pretty seriously because I have some funding now. That’s really exciting.”

In honor of #OleMissGivingDay, 5 Liberal Arts students visited Ventress Hall yesterday and signed the turret. This was the first time in years that a signature has been added to the 100+ names that date back to the 1910s. We are so grateful to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who made #OleMissGivingDay a success- the College of Liberal Arts raised over $48,000 thanks to your generosity and support! Our student winners were: Anderson DeWitt (Biology major from Alexandria, LA), Margaret Walker (Public Policy Leadership & and Integrated Marketing Communications major from Suwanee, GA), Casey McCarthy (English major from Palmetto Bay, FL), Eriona Banks (English major from Jackson, MS), and Marshall St. Amant (Classics major from Baton Rouge, LA)

In the 1910s, students started signing their name

In the 1910s, students started signing their name in the tower of Ventress Hall and a new campus tradition was born. Since then, generations of students have added their names to the tower. While renovations of the building restored Ventress Hall to its original Victorian splendor, this area was left alone (and closed off), allowing the memories to live on. For the first time in years, the tower of Ventress is going to be unlocked, and five Liberal Arts students will have the chance to join more than 100 years of UM students and sign the turret inside Ventress Hall as a special #OleMissGivingDay treat! Five students who make a gift of any size to the College of Liberal Arts TODAY by 3:30PM will be chosen at random to join Liberal Arts Dean Lee Cohen and sign the wall! BFA Art students Alexa Tamburlin, Vivi McCracken, and Eve Kelly installed their senior exhibitions this Sunday, which will be on display until March 24th in Gallery 130. All BFA Art students present an exhibition during their senior year that demonstrates their achievement in developing a mature and cohesive body of creative work. Stop by to see their exhibitions until Friday or next week to see the next round of BFA exhibitions!

The first production of the University of Mississi

The first production of the University of Mississippi Department of Theatre and Film‘s Spring 2023 season, which closed on Sunday, also marks the first time the department has hosted a visiting artist on an Achieving Equity grant from the University’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. Beth Reeves, who teaches theatre at Columbus State University, was the guest director for "Polaroid Stories," which tells Greek myths through stories of youth. The guest director position, designed for an early-career Black, Indigenous or person of color, or BIPOC, director and teacher, was conceived by Pria Wood, instructional assistant professor of theatre arts, who received an Achieving Equity grant for the position in spring 2022. Meet Reese! Reese Overstreet is a senior in the BFA Acting for Stage and Screen Program. She is the President of Alpha Psi Omega, and a member of Phi Kappa Phi and the Mortar Board. Hi! I’m Anna Reese Couhig, an English ambassador for the College of Liberal Arts! I am an English and Public Policy Leadership double major from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I have an emphasis in literature, Justice, and society and I love exploring different perspectives through literature in my classes. I spent last summer as a Congressional intern in Washington, D.C. for one of Mississippi’s senators, Senator Wicker. After college I hope to attend law school and eventually work in human rights law.
