Donald Trott, University of Mississippi professor of music and director of choral activities, has been honored by the American Choral Directors Association.

He was presented with the Southern Region ACDA Award of Excellence in February at the organization’s conference in Louisville, Kentucky.

Trott, who has been actively involved with ACDA for more than 40 years, was recognized for his career accomplishments and contributions to the association.

“I love the work I do, and I’m so thankful to be involved in this organization over such a long period of time,” he said. “I’ve met so many people through the ACDA.

“They are more than professional colleagues; they are friends – while you have a common bond with music, you also enjoy each other’s company while at the same time working together.”

Elizabeth Hearn, one such friend and UM assistant professor of choral music education, presented the award to Trott on behalf of the association.

“Don is an accomplished conductor and musician,” Hearn said. “His choirs have graced stages at state, regional and national conferences, and he has completed many successful international and domestic choir tours.

“Yet, it is not merely his musical achievements that set Don apart; it is his innate ability to inspire and uplift those around him that truly distinguishes him.”

Trott often travels to ACDA conferences with students to introduce them to the organization and new musical experiences.

“My involvement in the ACDA was certainly an important springboard for my career, and I want our students to have the same inspiration and joyful experience,” he said. “During these conferences, you hear choir after choir, providing ideas and inspiration that you take back to your daily work.

“Attending my first conference, I heard sounds that I hadn’t heard live before. It really is just an ear-opening opportunity for young people.”

Hearn also highlighted Trott’s impact as a mentor and leader.

“His leadership is characterized by kindness, grace and unwavering support,” she said. “His mentorship has touched countless lives, nurturing talents and fostering growth in all who have had the privilege of working alongside him.”

Trott has served as ACDA’s Virginia president and Southern region president, and has chaired numerous national, divisional and state conference committees. The association has recognized Trott’s service with an award three times in as many years.

“All of them are wonderful, but this one is special in that it recognizes my work associated with the 11-state South Region Conference.”
