2015 Faculty Grants—Writing and Rhetoric

Cummings, R. & Monroe, S., primary investigator

Z-Degree Mississippi

Sponsor: The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
Award Amount: $199,540.00

The Z-Degree Mississippi program is modeled after one started at Tidewater Community College in 2013 to promote the use of open, free textbooks in higher education. When enough faculty adopt the openly-licensed textbook materials, students can graduate with no textbook costs, faculty see gains in student learning, and universities see greater retention and degree completion. This grant aims to establish some Z-Degree courses at the eight public Mississippi institutions of higher education and four Mississippi community colleges, with pathways to A.A. degrees without textbook cost by the end of 2017.
