Chinese Language Flagship Program

Award Amount: $561,731.00

UM has one of 12 federally funded Chinese Language Flagship Programs in the country. The program assists students in achieving superior proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. Each semester students enroll in one Chinese language course in addition to coursework related to their own major. After achieving Advanced High proficiency by the spring semester of their senior year, students spend a fifth “capstone” year of study and internship in China to achieve Superior proficiency.

ROTC Chinese Language and Culture Program – Project Go Mississippi

Sponsor: Institute of International Education
Award Amount: $375,920.00

Project GO (Global Officers) supports domestic and overseas critical language study for ROTC students nationwide. The goal for all participants is to achieve Intermediate level proficiency in a critical language and to study abroad for at least eight weeks.

MS StarTalk 9

Sponsor: National Security Agency
Award Amount: $89,998.00

Mississippi StarTalk is a program funded by the Federal government to provide high school students with intensive instruction in Chinese on the UM campus during the summer. In addition to studying Chinese, students will participate in a cultural program introducing them to China, its people, and its culture.

Project GO Annual Meeting 2015

This grant allows UM to host the 2015 annual meeting of Project GO, attended by program staff from all Project GO institutions and its sponsoring institution, the Defense Language and National Security Education Office.

Lafayette High School Chinese Program

The Department of Modern Languages at UM is partnering with Lafayette HS in Oxford and ALLEX to support Chinese-language instruction at LHS for the next two academic years.

UM-Tupelo High School Japanese Instruction

Sponsor: Tupelo Public School District
Award Amount: $21,980.00

With a trained recruit from ALLEX, UM will partner with Tupelo High School to offer instruction in the Japanese language.

Fall of the Wall Campus Weeks

Award Amount: $8,000.00

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany provided grants to promote the profile of the German program on our campus. In spring of 2014, we held a series of events focussed on the topic “Germany in Europe.” In the Fall semester, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with films and guest speakers.
