Study all aspects of the ancient Mediterranean world, including ancient languages, literatures, history, art, and archaeology.

Department of Economics

Economics provides insight for business, public policy and human behavior in general. Among the many topics studied in economics are the impact of monopolies, the problems of unemployment and inflation, as well as issues related to economic growth and development (e.g., why are some countries rich and other countries poor?).

Department of English

English majors are trained to think, read, analyze, and write in ways that allow them to adapt to the particular requirements of most professions. They are prepared to absorb, understand, prioritize, and analyze many different kinds of knowledge and content.

Department of History

The study of history explores our shared and diverse past, providing an essential context and perspective on the contemporary world. Studying history enhances a student’s ability to think and reason, to communicate effectively, and to organize systematically, evaluate, and interpret information.

Department of Mathematics

We deliver comprehensive mathematics education, through diverse courses, research initiatives, and expert guidance.

Department of Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages develops high language proficiencies in its students and is committed to undergirding language programs with sound linguistic and pedagogical principles. Equally important in the Department are the study of literature, cinema, and culture.

Department of Music

We provide a transformative educational experience through music that empowers students to realize their full potential, cultivate their unique talents, and make meaningful contributions to the world. Our students work closely with faculty and peers as they perform, research, engage with the community, and develop relationships that prepare them to be successful leaders, scholars, and artists.

Department of Philosophy and Religion

The study of philosophy offers students an opportunity to confront many of life’s most profound and enduring questions while also providing training in clear and critical thinking. Religious Studies aims to understand sympathetically yet critically the world’s religions, and to explore the phenomenon of religion itself as a prominent component of human life and culture.

Department of Physics and Astronomy

We provide a nurturing and challenging environment for our students. We take pride in our instruction of young future scientists. As a student in the department, you will work and interact with an enthusiastic and dedicated group of scholars.

Department of Political Science

Political science is the study of political institutions and political behavior at the local, state, national, and international levels. Students of political science will develop critical thinking, writing, and oral communication skills essential to effective citizenship, as well as many careers.

Department of Psychology

Psychology is a field that studies behavior, mental activities, and the biological processes that underlie them. Psychologists apply the scientific method to understand many different topics, such as, the brain, development, social interactions, personality, psychopathology, and cognition.

Department of Public Policy Leadership

The Department of Public Policy Leadership provides a challenging undergraduate major that prepares high-performing students for positions of leadership in an increasingly complex world. The interdisciplinary program emphasizes the global nature of responsible decision making, the ethical imperatives of leadership, critical thinking, communication skills, and the conceptual and methodological skills necessary for careful policy analysis.

Department of Sociology and Anthropology

We study social behavior, institutions, and structures within human societies and examine the cultural, social, and biological aspects of human life across different societies and historical periods.

Department of Theatre & Film

The Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Mississippi offers great artistic and academic opportunities. Our students receive individualized attention from a faculty with extensive professional experience and we create performance, design, and stage management opportunities for all of our students.

Department of Writing and Rhetoric

The Department of Writing and Rhetoric is the home of the University of Mississippi’s First-Year Writing and Speech Communication programs, the B.A. in Rhetoric, the UM Writing Centers, and the UM Speaking Center.

Center for Archaeological Research

We investigate, understand, and raise awareness about the archaeological resources of Mississippi and the South through field, laboratory, and collections-based research.

Center for Biodiversity and Conservation Research

The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation Research coordinates efforts by the faculty and students at the University of Mississippi, and our professional affiliates at governmental agencies and non-governmental groups, to research, manage and conserve biodiversity.

Center for Civil War Research

The Center for Civil War Research is designed to promote a more thorough understanding of the American Civil War, its history and its scholarship, among the various constituencies of the University and the broader community. Our programing includes a biannual Conference on the Civil War, the Wiley-Silver Prize for Best First Book in Civil War History, the annual Burnham Lecture in Civil War History, and research funding for graduate students.

Center for Economic Science and Economic Education

The Center for Economic Science and Economic Education seeks to educate the general public, teachers, educators, and policymakers about economic theory and policy.

Center for Multi-messenger Astrophysics

The Center for Multi-Messenger Astrophysics harnesses the power of gravitational waves alongside traditional astronomy to unlock the universe's most enigmatic phenomena.

Center for Population Studies

The Center for Population Studies (CPS) helps leaders and organizations across Mississippi access free, publicly available data and use that data to make informed decisions in their local communities. CPS, in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, operates the State Data Center of Mississippi and, as part of the University of Mississippi, educates students and the public about population issues.

Center for the Study of Southern Culture

The Center for the Study of Southern Culture seeks to investigate, document, interpret, and teach about the American South through academic inquiry and publications, documentary studies of film, photography, and oral history, and public outreach programs.

Clinical-Disaster Research Center

The Clinical Disaster Research Center is a diverse team of researchers from the University of Mississippi Department of Psychology. The UM-CDRC works within the areas of clinical disaster research, positive psychology, consultation, program evaluation, and disaster response training.

FASTrack Learning Community

We provide a strong foundation for academic success at Ole Miss by helping first-year students build campus connections through linked classes, one-on-one mentoring, living-learning residences, co-curricular programs, and student leadership opportunities.

Grove Scholars

Employing a cohort model, an incentive structure, and a summer bridge program, Grove Scholars works to close the gap between access and equity for Mississippi resident students beginning prior to freshmen year through graduation.

Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement

The Grisham-McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement advances transformative service throughout the University and fights poverty through education in Mississippi.

Haley Barbour Center for the Study of American Politics

The Haley Barbour Center for the Study of American Politics serves to increase interest in and knowledge of American politics, especially campaigns and elections.

Health Professions Advising Office

We counsel UM health professions students on available health care career opportunities and advise students towards a competitive application. We take your aspirations and help you to become to best candidate for professional school.

Psychological Services Center

Psychological services provides affordable and accessible services to the Mississippi community. We also engage in research that improves treatment across the nation, and provide in-depth training to our skilled staff of clinical graduate students.

Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies

We offer students, faculty, staff, and visitors a gathering place, as well as an atmosphere of mutual encouragement and support for women of all ages and backgrounds.

Social Science Research Laboratory

We conduct social science research on issues of state, national, and international importance that affect the citizens of Mississippi.

ROTC Programs

Department of Aerospace Studies

The Department of Aerospace Studies, a unit of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, functions under the joint jurisdiction of the university and the Department of the Air Force. Its primary purpose is to select and prepare cadets who desire entry in the United States Air Force as officers.

Department of Military Science & Leadership

Through the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) college program, we prepare students to become officers in the United States Army, combining academic education with military training, leadership development, and physical fitness.

Department of Naval Science

We are the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) unit at The University of Mississippi. Founded in 1946, Ole Miss NROTC is Mississippi’s flagship Naval Officers training command. We develop Midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically to prepare them for careers as future officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
