About the CLA James Meredith Changemaker Award
This award is intended to highlight the work for change that is often not recognized at the time it is being done. It is an award that also recognizes the personal courage and resilience required to do such work while also pursuing a college degree. Given the varied nature of the many academic disciplines contained within the College, this award will reflect the multitude of ways that students in these disciplines– the fine and performing arts, the natural sciences and mathematics, the humanities, and the social sciences – can use the knowledge they gain to help expand educational opportunities and advance problem solving to benefit all people. Mr. Meredith has dedicated a lifetime of work to ensuring that all Mississippians – and all people – have full access to the power of education. Awardees of the College of Liberal Arts James Meredith Changemaker Award will be students who walk in his footsteps, continuing the difficult and critical work of change and transformation.
Nominations for potential award recipients open in the fall and close early spring. Faculty, Staff, and students may nominate graduating seniors majoring in the College of Liberal Arts. Self nominations are welcomed. Nominees will be invited to complete applications for the award. The winner of the award will receive a monetary award from the College.
Nominees will receive a notification from the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts inviting them to submit their application for consideration. Nominations will be reviewed, and finalists will be selected by the College of Liberal Arts James Meredith Changemaker Award committee, Co-Chaired by Dr. Kirsten Dellinger and Valeria Beasley Ross. The winner of the award will be announced at the Annual College of Liberal Arts Award Event. Each finalist will receive the College of Liberal Arts Medal. The winner will receive the College of Liberal Arts James Meredith Changemaker Award Medal, a plague, and a monetary award.
On September, 28, 2022, Lee M. Cohen, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, announced the James Meredith Changemaker Award, which recognizes graduating undergraduate students majoring in the College of Liberal Arts who have helped broaden access, participation and opportunities in higher education.
Meredith, who in 1962 became the first African American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi, graduated in August 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in political science which is a major and an academic Department housed in the College of Liberal Arts. Following graduation, he continued to study political science at University of Ibadan in Nigeria before earning a law degree at Columbia University.

Phi Beta Kappa, founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, is the oldest undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Its mission is to recognize academic excellence and promote education in the liberal arts and sciences. Election to Phi Beta Kappa has been a recognition of outstanding academic achievement. The goal of the Phi Beta Kappa Society is to encourage humane learning—breadth of interest, depth of understanding, intellectual honesty, and respect for a diversity of informed opinion.
The UM chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered on April 6, 2001. Membership is conferred upon fewer than ten percent of each graduating class by the Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Selection is based upon the evidence of broad cultural interests, scholarly achievement, and good character. Students demonstrate a broad exposure to the liberal arts—fine arts, humanities, languages, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and history.

In 1904, Dr. William T. Taylor of Booneville, MS, founded the Marcus Elvis Taylor Memorial award at the University of Mississippi, “out of affection and regard for the memory of his son, the late Dr. Marcus Elvis Taylor, an honored alumnus of the University of the Class of 1871, and out of benevolent regard and good will for the youth of the state and the interest and work of the University of Mississippi, and for the encouragement of meritorious scholarship and deportment.”
Students are nominated for outstanding scholarship in their particular field combined with superior work in all other subjects. The number awarded annually may not be more than one percent of the student body. To be eligible, a student must have a GPA of 3.90 or higher and completed at least 105 hours of overall course credit. Transfer students must have earned forty-five semester hours at the University of Mississippi prior to being nominated.
